Druk Wangyal Festival

The Dochula Pass, situated between Thimphu and Punakha, is adorned with 108 memorial chortens called "Druk Wangyal Chortens," constructed by Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk, the Queen Mother of Bhutan. Just above the pass lies an open courtyard where the unique Druk Wangyel Festival is held.

Unlike traditional tshechus, this festival is performed by the Royal Bhutan Army rather than monks or laypeople. Established in 2011, it commemorates the victory of the Fourth Druk Gyelpo and the armed forces in 2003. Soldiers undergo three months of training in folk and mask dances for this occasion. The festival, starting at 9:00 AM and concluding at 4:15 PM, pays homage to the wise leadership of His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the Fourth King of Bhutan, and honors the continuous efforts of the Royal Bhutan Army in safeguarding the country's sovereignty and stability. This unique tshechu takes place against the backdrop of the magnificent Jigme Singye Wangchuck mountain range and was composed by Dasho Karma Ura for this special occasion.
